I always thought it was because of the stress on their joints when they jump, it probably hurts a little bit. I give them fish oil to help their joints. I just break open the capsules I take. I started this when our first cat got cancer (undetected after three visits to the vet, so awful!) and she was very lethargic and ill. The fish oil really perked her up. We saw a huge difference in her mood and it was obvious that she felt better. My older cat does that too.
