It was ice…blue ice cubes!

Can you see it now? Huh? Huh? Can you? This is what we made!

Ahh yes, but why did we make blue ice cubes and then put them in the clear top from the pecan pie we devoured for Christmas, filling it up with water and adding a black shoestring?

WinterSuncatcher

Why, to make a winter suncatcher for outside our front door, of course! After freezing the ice cubes, water and shoestring out on our deck, we popped the ice disk out of the plastic lid and hung it up!

WinterSuncatcher

Where did I get this cool idea? Not from the storehouse of ideas in my own brain, let me tell you. Sara was one of many who answered my call to share what other mothers do with their kiddos in the winter. See all of the other awesome winter craft suggestions right here…and add some of your own ideas!

Lennie and Melanie were the first people to guess “blue ice cubes” while something on “gauze” or “paper towel” was surprisingly (Nice work!) guessed by many, with Janelle being first. The many ice fishing guesses were brilliant, too, as my husband does that a lot with our children. Thing is, I’m not usually there to take pictures, though! B and Erica chimed in late with their answers, but both were pretty close.

More crafts will be coming soon to a MckHouse near me. I know this for one because my neighbor (wife of the farmer who works the fields across the way from us) and I went on an outing today…towards A Bigger City to eat Chipotle and hit a craft warehouse. Fun, fun times. I ran the aisles like I was in Supermarket Sweep, having flashbacks to when I would order supplies for my art classroom when I was a (paid) teacher (to students I was not related to). You know, as opposed to now, when I am an (unpaid) teacher to students (I am related to)!

Oh, and there was snow (falling and/or already on the ground) in forty nine, yes forty nine, of the fifty States in the US today. The only state without a flake of snow to be seen in it just so happens to be the one I’ll be flying to on Friday.

No winter suncatcher making in Florida!

Yes, there’s snow like Alabama hasn’t seen since 1993 and I personally don’t want to see any more! I actually don’t mind the snow. It’s beautiful and I was able to see my first white Christmas ever (I’m 31!) this past year. But this ice thing has just gotta go! I’m not lovin’ not being able to get to the…anywhere…when I want to. The first mention of a flurry in AL starts a mad panic and you won’t find bread or milk anywhere for miles. Bread and milk sandwich anybody? Seriously! But the ice is just something we are not equipped or accustomed to. Thankfully it’s melting away now, and hopefully no more for the season. Enjoy your snow-free state!

What a fun (and pretty) idea! Very clever :)

  3. Laura says:

There was a day last week or the week before that there was snow in jacksonville.

  4. Melanie says:

Wow, looks fun! Love the color it made! I knew I was close, it reminded me of ‘gluing’ ice together so to speak, and hanging them by a string. Haha!

  5. scott says:

That is such a neat little idea!

  6. Another Mama says:

Can I ask what craft warehouse? Would love a place in ye-old city to find crafts for cheaper than A LOT! : )

  7. Darlene says:

What a neat idea. Gotta check out the crafts got 4 kiddos tonight.

  8. Marissa says:

Another fun ice project..mix powdered tempera paint (you could use food coloring but the colors won’t be as bold) and water, fill ice cube trays with it, and place a Popsicle stick in each cube. Freeze and pop out for little icy paintbrushes. Let the kids rub them on paper to make their designs.

  9. Susan says:

31 degrees this morning (with a feels like tempature of 20) in Tampa Bay. Hope it warms up soon for your trip! Enjoy your time here!!

  10. Paige says:

  13. brittany says:

23 here in st augustine, florida this morning when my husband went to work! we could make one, it just wouldnt last long! really wishing it would snow here, and considering a drive to georgia to let the kids play!

  14. Katie S. says:

Good morning! Is it too late to get info on your Tampa shoot this weekend? Location, prices, etc? Thanks so much for your help!

  15. Carmen Moore says:

I live in Florida…it “feels” like 29 degrees this AM with the windchill. I could probably do the craft at my house, however, will be in the 70s in just 2 days. Even though we do not have snow, we have crazy weather – 30s one day, 70s the next! Where in Florida are you headed McKmama?

  16. Stacy says:

You could make suncatchers in Florida – it’s 31 degrees in orlando!!!

  17. B'sMom says:

The last time we did something like this was in the spring. Me and the kids went on a nature walk and each gathered little treasures in their bag. When we got back home we put them in a big bowl of water with a long green ribbon (for the hanger). We hung it in the tree in the front yard to watch. It was filled with flowers, long blades of grass, rocks, a few small sticks…and who knows what else.

  18. momofm@m says:

It looks sooo pretty. You should make a whole buch, all different colours! Sometimes you can find ice cube trays tat make all different shapes of ice at a dollar store. Hope you keep us updated on how long it lasts, looks like it will be there for quite a while. I swear I can still see a finger in that last post.

  19. What a cool idea. THAT is a craft I could manage doing w/ my kids. I need more of these kinds of crafts… you know… the ones that don’t require a crafty thumb!

  20. Dena says:

pretty cool idea, MckMama….no pun intended.

  21. Lorie Smith says:

That’s right…no snow here in Florida, but depending on where you’re going, you might still want to pack some warm clothes…it’s BRRRRRRRRR cold where I am. :)

  22. EJ says:

I’m in north FL and we were 19 this morning, up to 24 now. We have had snow this year, but not yesterday! I hope you are visiting central or south FL so you can enjoy something warmer than we have to offer up here.

  23. Jennifer says:

Neat idea! I teach elementary school art as well and my students like to mix shaving cream and glue and paint big fluffy snowmen-they look really cool and stay fluffy after they dry! As a matter of fact we’re doing that today!

  24. Amanda says:

Interesting fact-Forty nine of the 50 states. Great googly moogly! I’m tired of snow and it’s only been here since Monday. I’m thinking spring :) !

  25. chicknmama says:

LOL LOL never in a million years would’ve guessed that!! cute :)

  26. Lori says:

My son always loved to “paint” the snow with spray or squeeze bottle filled with colored water. (food coloring & water) It provided hours of great entertainment.

  27. Branson says:

What a great idea! Will def check out the link to more! Thanks!

  28. Karina says:

Cool. It’s COOOOOOLLLLLLDDDDD here. Really cold. So, I may try this with the littles this week!

  29. Lisa says:

Great Idea !!!!! I live in S.C. and BELIEVE IT OR NOT…I could make some of those and they would probably last a couple of days. It is 17degrees where I am right now. Oh and by the way, For the first time in my life (I’m 44)… I shoveled snow. I would have to say… it isn’t for me. Did give me a good workout though. Hope you have a GREAT time “while you work” ( put the work thing there so people won’t think you are leaving your family for fun) in Florida. Think I’ll go see if my 16 year old daughter wants to help me make some suncatchers. Have a safe trip !!!!!!!

  30. Satine says:

    Are you flying to Hawai?

  31. Aja says:

Let me tell you, there was LOTS of complaining about the cold here in Orlando, FL today! We’re not down with 50 degree days. I don’t know how y’all do it!

  32. Jen L. says:

Love that idea. Have fun in Florida.

  33. Cherilyn says:

I just saw this in a Family Fun magazine – I was going to do it with my kids this week too. Neat idea!

  34. MelissaH says:

How cool! I am so excited to try this tomorrow!!!! (with the kids of course, I would never want to try this by myself just because it looks so neat!) :-)

  35. Becky says:

BUT…I’ve seen the forecast stating chance of rain (were I’ll be visiting FL from the Frozen Tundra, a little more north than you, hence I’m flying from Fargo, ND, don’t-cha know?) Sunday evening through Tuesday. I don’t like that plan since I’ll be camping. Hope you get your photo shoots in when it’s dry.

  36. Mommie24 says:

This is a very creative idea….I bet the kids loved it!

  37. Jennifer says:

Such a cute craft and perfect for the very cold days we have been having too! Look forward to seeing what you come up with from your new art supplies.

  38. Corrine says:

I would love to know how your children are kept occupied during Ice fishing. As someone who has a husband who’s been doing it since he was a twenty year old, I know that ice fishing entails sitting and staring at a hole for perhaps hours on end. And even with the best heater it is cold.

As someone who would like her husband to take the kids with them…please let me know how he does it! Entertainment and the like.

  39. Mindy Harris says:

really? it’s been snowing everywhere? i am so out of the loop. until i read this. thanks for the update. ha.

  40. Laura says:

Love it! That is just so, so fun :)

  41. Malissa says:

I’m quite (and probably too) excited that you’ll be in the Sunshine State, and Tampa, no less…where it’s currently cool but otherwise gorgeous!
    safe travels!
    Blessings from FL :)

  42. Amy O'Connor says:

That looks fun! I don’t think it would last very long down here though!

  43. ooh, running the isles of a craft warehouse sounds like a blast!

have a wonderful. productive, blessed, and safe time in Florida!

  44. Katy Ibarra says:

close…I said a drink! i absolutely thought you’d made ice cubes out of something blue that you could drink then put the cubes into the actualy blue drink haha! isn’t funny how you look at those kind of pictures and imagine it could be all kinds of things…then you see the big picture and your like, “ooohhhhh”. Anyway, snow in 49 states? I hadn’t heard that! Very cool!

  45. Kathy says:

    Interesting idea :)

  46. ~Debra says:

Very cool idea! Too bad we don’t have snow or freezing temperatures in our little area of Japan!

    Have a safe trip!

  47. Deanna says:

LOL dammit I tried to be first!

    COOL IDEA!!!!!!

    • ~Debra says:

Can I ask why many try so hard to be first? I don’t get it.

      • Deanna says:

        Just for fun?

        • Lisa J says:

I never understood it either until one day I read here and realized, well, I was THE FIRST!! Something cool about maybe being the first to read or write. It’s not completely life-altering, but you gotta take joy where you find it! Ha! (I almost LOLed and caught myself. Whew!)

And, for the record, I was first on MckMama twice!! I think it was even within one week. I am sure she remebers it too! HA!

    • hmase says:

you can have my first……thought maybe the world stopped commenting & just threw somethin out there to check…..

      • mckmama77 says:

“You can have my first”….ahahaha! Love it. You guys are fun. I actually enjoy being first to comment on blogs that typically get lots of comments. It feels like I accomplished a difficult challenge, even if I wasn’t trying!

        • Karina says:

exactly! and the only time I was ever first on your blog was the day you posted my Not Me? linky for me! The closest I’ve ever been on my own was 3rd. (also for a Not Me! Like, way early on in the Not Me! world) Speaking of which, I kinda miss Not Me’s. Maybe we could do one occasionally!?!?!

          • Deanna says:

            Its like a race LOL

Now to get more traffic at my blog LOL I guess I’m not as interesting… Hmmmm perhaps I should have made a resolution for 2011 to become more interesting.

  48. hmase says:

    cute!
