It’s coming along nicely.

I love this idea and have been wondering how things were growing on that straw bale, thanks for the updates. Might have to try this next year!
Awesome job! And when it is all done you have the fixins for you won compost pile…Kim
I am starting to think this is pretty cool. Loved the pictures.
I transplanted my plants into my straw bales today. I have been watering and fertilizing with organic feed. When I went to plant today (I was so super excited to finally be to the day I could plant) I found these weird, Styrofoam-like white balls in both of my bales. They were surrounded by what look like webs made out of silk. So my genius guess is that they are silk worm eggs? I went ahead and planted anyways. Hopefully, it won’t cause any problems. Have you found anything like that in your bales?
Wow, your garden is pretty far along compared to what I have going at the moment. I love the photos, you must have a high quality camera.
I love it!!! I have been waiting to see some more pictures of how it is going.
Those are radishes poking through right? I don’t know about you but successful seed germination is one of my favorite parts of straw bale gardening. Every day we watch more and more things poke through – we’re up to 14 peas so far and a dozen radishes.
Not sure what your plan is for fertilizing during the growing season, but I’m going to be adding a little every week. Not a lot, but about 2 cups for my 15 bales of a 5-7-3 or something similar.
Have fun this weekend! I’m jealous of your waterside location – it’ll be much cooler there than in the Cities where I’m shooting. Hopefully nobody will pass out
I was JUST thinking yesterday about the “passing out” wedding. Know what? That couple NEVER even bought any of their wedding photos! And yes…I think those might be radishes. We did plant them. But I have no idea if that’s them, to be honest:) Have a great weekend!!!
It was a memorable one to say the least!
That’s crazy that they never bought any prints! I’d have a huge one of the field pics hanging on my wall asap if it were me! That reminds me, I have a client that asked for an album, approved the design, and then never ordered it. That was almost two years ago.
Forgot to say how GREAT the sides of the bales look! If I hadn’t had to put zucchini and pumpkin on the sides I would have gone back to the store for annuals. Next year….
That is the greatest gardening idea I have ever seen!! I am flat out going to copycat it. Today! If I can find a haybale.
Honestly, I have never heard of this before reading and seeing it on your blog!
It looks amazing! And very pretty!
I will definitely have to tell my mom about it.
I think it is something that she would like!
Wow, that looks way better then I thought it would. Quite pretty really.
Fun–looks great and very pretty. My fave are the flowers.

Schöne Bilder, machen Lust aufs Gärtnern.
Dir, deiner Famile und der Schwangerschaft alles Gute!
viele Grüße von Nadine aus Deutschland
Sehr schön!
They are looking so good!
Ok I think you’ve convinced me to do this too. I hope there is still time this season…We made a huge planter (just a frame and fabric, so it would decompose after a year anyway) but we can’t afford the soil to fill it, and my seedlings are outgrowing their little containers indoors. I have a community garden, which I am using for corn, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, raddishes, peppers and potatoes but I want to grow so much more. I’m in a rented house and not allowed to plant in the ground (actually, I’m allowed to plant flowers but not vegetables, how weird is that?). I’m thinking this straw bale thing may work, if I hurry up and get some and start watering…It looks so pretty too with all the flowers in the sides.
Looks great, everything is growing so well! I will have to send you some pics of our garden and the harvesting that is happening now! Yesterday was a great day…lots of cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, cilantro, basil and other stuff! Nice, warm weather you guys are having…glad you guys are putting it to good use! Oh, started the watering of the bales I am going to use for borders on my garden!
Very impressive.
So cool! Can you do root vegetables in there as well?
Very cool! I must admit I thought straw bale gardening was the weirdest thing I’d heard of when you first starting talking about it. I was interested to see though! I told my husband about it. He laughed and didn’t believe me. I had to come show him pics on your blog. Definitely need to show him the pics today!
I love the flowers on the side. They really make it look nice. I wish I had a good spot in my yard to do that. We have a woods in the back, and lots of wildlife that make gardening hard. Now all you need is a nice drip irrigation system so watering isn’t a big deal.
That’s WAY cool! I might have to try gardening that way. Seems so UNmessy.
Love it….absolutely awesome (-= You go veggie growing (and baby growing) momma
This is wonderful! Thanks for sharing! I look forward to seeing more pictures further down…I might have to try this one year!
Blessings,
Camie
That is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen! Very pretty too! Awesome thing to have the kids help with.
Thanks for sharing!
Molly
Cool! The second last picture makes me think of a fuzzy, florally caterpillar.
I’m not into gardening much at the moment. It is just too hot and muggy and buggy were we live and I don’t like insect bites (or DEET). I’m a teacher on summer break but I wish summer break came in the spring!
Wow! It’s beautiful! Makes me want to try it!
A sister-in-law is trying one of those HUGE round bails this year! Lucky thing that she’s tall – there’s a lot of reaching involved – but it’s going well now that it’s planted! She did the flowers on the sides, too and it looks great!
It looks so nice with the flowers draped down the sides. I love a garden that looks as pretty as it is funtional. Nice job!
Ok… so I think this is totally cool!!!!
)
But I think you need a post on explaining on how you do this!
We do a big huge garden every year… but this would be super cool to try
That is so pretty. This is such a cool way to garden. I can’t wait to see how everything turns out.
I’m confused on how to do it too but would LOVE to do this next year since our garden got flooded this year. It was our first garden, and first fail!
If my garden fails this year, I am totally doing that next year. I hate weeds!!!! God bless.
Wow — that looks really great! How many straw bales do you have in all?
It looks so great!
Neat idea! If I ever have a yard of my own, I might give this a try.
That is so cool! I’ll have to admit, I was somewhat confused about the concept, but it is really neat and I can’t wait to see how it continues to grow. Especially pretty with the flowers on the side!
Those look so pretty and colorful!! I might have to research that idea for next year (or read your other posts about it). I am so scared of gardening it’s not funny, because everything that we’ve ever tried to do always gets overrun with weeds very quickly.
The flowers make your garden look so pretty! It’s fun to “discover” this new kind of gardening through your experience! Thanks for sharing.
It looks lovely. It’s hard to imagine what it will look like until you actually see it.
love the flowers! that is awesome!
It’s as pretty as it is functional. Your kids will eat the peas before they ever hit the house…believe me, I know.
It looks great! I’m just so curious why you decided to “straw bale garden” instead of just the traditional garden in regular soil?
Great question! Here are some of the benefits of straw bale gardening:
here are a few reasons why some people like straw bale gardening:
a) virtually no weeding
b) not as much bending
c) easy for kids to see the plants and get involved
d) kids and pets can’t trample the garden as easily
e) no need to till the ground
f) can garden even if you have terrible soil…or no soil at all!
g) you can plant a lot more while not taking up as much ground space (since you can plant in the sides, too)
h) it’s fun and unique!
Those are some of the reasons I decided to try straw bale gardening;)
AWESOME! Thanks! I have a HUGE garden (and a 3 month and 3 year old) so I would love less weeds. We gave our 3 year old her own “garden” (bare square of dirt) that she can trample in, pull weeds, “plant”, and (over) water. She loves it. My washing machine hates me for the idea!
It looks great! What all did you plant? The flowers around the outsides are a nice touch!
BEAUTIFUL!! I may have to try that!
